R05200 Tantalum Tube: What Does the Grade Mean?
An old drawing may say R05200. The maintenance list may only say "pure tantalum tube." The new RFQ may add ASTM B521 but leave out whether the tube is seamless or welded.
All three documents can belong to the same part, yet they are not saying the same thing.
R05200 is the material grade. Keeping that grade unchanged through quotation, production, and certification helps prevent a replacement order from drifting into a more general "pure tantalum" specification.
The tube itself still needs to be described separately.

Keep the Grade Exact When the Project Already Gives One
R05200 is the UNS designation for vacuum-melted unalloyed tantalum under ASTM B521.
For a buyer, that is usually enough background.
When an equipment drawing already specifies R05200 Tantalum Tube, there is little reason to replace the grade with a commercial description such as "99.95% tantalum" or simply "pure tantalum."
Those descriptions are often seen in quotations, especially during early price comparison, but they are not as precise as keeping the original UNS grade.
The problem usually appears later in the document trail.
A quotation may say pure tantalum. The purchase order copies the quotation. Several months later, the receiving team looks for R05200 on the material certificate and finds that the grade was never written clearly on the order.
That is avoidable.
R05400 is also an unalloyed tantalum grade, but it uses a powder-metallurgy consolidation route rather than the vacuum-melting route associated with R05200. Both materials may be described commercially as unalloyed tantalum, so the general material name is not enough when the project has already selected one grade.
The same caution applies to Ta1 and purity percentages.
They can be useful when discussing available tantalum material, but they should not quietly replace R05200 on a project that calls for R05200.
For repeat equipment, this becomes even more useful. The grade on the old MTC can be carried directly into the replacement RFQ, then checked again when the new certificate arrives.
No translation between several different material names is needed.
Check the Tube Construction Before Copying an Old Specification
R05200 does not tell the supplier whether the tube is seamless or welded.
ASTM B521 covers both.
That detail is easy to lose on replacement orders because the old tube may already be installed, cut, welded, or damaged. The maintenance team can measure OD and wall thickness, but the original manufacturing route may not be obvious from a used piece.
If the project requires seamless construction, write it directly:
R05200 Tantalum Tube, ASTM B521, Seamless
If welded construction is acceptable, that should be equally clear.
A welded R05200 Tantalum Tube is not outside the standard. It is another permitted tube form under ASTM B521. Whether it fits the project depends on the equipment design and fabrication requirements.
Dimensions come next.
Suppose the old tube measures about 25.4 mm OD with a 1.0 mm wall. Those numbers are useful, but the replacement still needs a length requirement and some understanding of what happens at the ends.
A local workshop may cut the new tube after delivery.
Another project may need a finished replacement section that fits between two fixed locations with very little room for adjustment.
Those are different orders even when OD and wall thickness are identical.
The same applies to a tube that will later be expanded, machined, or welded into another part. A small amount of extra length may be useful in one case and unacceptable in another.
Straightness should be treated in the same practical way.
A short sleeve normally gives the fabricator plenty of freedom. A long R05200 Tantalum Tube passing through aligned holes or a tube sheet does not.
This is why an old sample works best when it is used together with a drawing rather than as the only reference.
Measure the part, but also look at where it was cut, how it was connected, and which areas were exposed during service.

An Old Tube Can Tell More Than Its Dimensions
Replacement enquiries often start after the original tube has already been removed.
That tube may contain useful information.
If the wall is still uniform and the part was replaced because of accidental damage, copying the original specification may be fairly straightforward.
If one section has become noticeably thinner, the reason deserves a closer look before the next R05200 Tantalum Tube is ordered.
The location of the damage is often the first clue.
Wear near an inlet may point toward flow conditions. Damage concentrated around a joint raises different questions. Deposits inside one part of the tube may show that the real operating condition was not uniform along the full length.
Process history is useful here.
The equipment may have been designed years ago for one concentration and later operated at another. Cleaning chemicals may have changed. A shutdown procedure can leave liquid sitting in a low section even though the normal process is continuous flow.
R05200 is used in chemical-processing equipment because unalloyed tantalum is selected for corrosion resistance in suitable aggressive media, but the grade name alone cannot describe every service condition.
For a replacement tube, it is worth checking the main chemical, concentration, temperature, pressure, and any important contaminants when those details are available.
The fabrication area deserves the same attention.
Tantalum has to be protected carefully during welding because hot tantalum is sensitive to atmospheric contamination. Clean joint preparation and proper shielding are therefore important when the tube becomes part of a welded assembly.
A material certificate cannot show how the previous joint was made.
If damage is concentrated close to a welded area, the maintenance review should include fabrication history instead of assuming that the tantalum grade itself was unsuitable.
That does not make every replacement project complicated.
It simply means that a worn tube is more than a dimensional sample. Sometimes the surface condition tells the buyer what needs to be checked before the next purchase.

Build the RFQ Around the Part, Not Around the Grade Name
Once R05200 and ASTM B521 are confirmed, the rest of the RFQ can stay quite practical.
A clear starting line may be:
- R05200 Tantalum Tube
- ASTM B521
- Seamless
- 25.4 mm OD x 1.0 mm WT x 1000 mm
That already tells the supplier far more than "pure tantalum tube."
From there, only add requirements that change manufacturing, inspection, or later fabrication.
For some orders, the important points are:
- OD and wall thickness tolerance;
- cut length;
- seamless or welded construction;
- straightness;
- end condition;
- surface and internal cleanliness;
- annealed or other required condition;
- later machining, expanding, bending, or welding;
- process medium and operating temperature;
- required inspection or leak testing;
- R05200 material certificate and heat traceability.
A short piece that will be machined locally does not need the same controls as a finished process tube ready for installation.
The RFQ should reflect that difference.
There is also no need to load every order with tight tolerances simply because tantalum is expensive. A tolerance is useful when it protects fit, machining allowance, welding, or equipment performance. Otherwise, it may only add unnecessary processing.
For R05200 Tantalum Tube, the grade should stay consistent from the drawing to the certificate.
Everything after that should describe the actual tube the workshop needs: how it is made, what size it must be, what happens to it after delivery, and where it will work.
That is usually more useful than turning R05200 into a long material definition.
