Application of Ruthenium–Iridium Coated Titanium Anodes in Water Heater Corrosion Protection

Aug 19, 2025 Leave a message

During the use of electric water heaters, issues such as water leakage, electric leakage, or reduced water output often occur. In many cases, these failures are caused by the rapid depletion of the sacrificial magnesium rod, which, once exhausted and not replaced in time, leads to corrosion and perforation of the inner tank and heating elements.

Generally, the magnesium rod of a water heater must be replaced every two years. However, for products from some manufacturers with lower quality standards, the rod may corrode away in less than a year. Short service life, frequent replacement, and increased maintenance cost are major drawbacks of magnesium-rod-based corrosion protection. The limited lifespan of the inner tank remains one of the most critical challenges for the water heater industry. Once the tank leaks, the entire heater becomes unusable, resulting in direct economic losses for the user. The root cause of tank failure is usually the corrosion caused by anions in tap water. Since water quality varies greatly across different regions of China, it is difficult to develop a single protective technology effective for all types of water.

When current passes through the electrodes, chloride ions (Cl⁻) in tap water migrate toward the titanium electrode with a mixed metal oxide (Ru–Ir) coating, which functions as the anode. This Ruthenium–Iridium Titanium Anode causes chloride ions to accumulate near the anode, while their concentration around the cathodic heater tank decreases significantly. As a result, the corrosion rate of the tank is reduced, and its service life is greatly extended.
