China’s Titanium Industry Is Accelerating Its Upgrade And Steadily Advancing Towards 300,000 Tons Of Titanium Sponge And 250,000 Tons Of Titanium Materials

May 16, 2025 Leave a message

China's titanium sector is advancing its modernization efforts, with clear targets of reaching 300,000 tons of titanium sponge and 250,000 tons of titanium products as it moves forward with steady expansion.

China's titanium industry has established a full production chain, supporting stable growth across the sector. Data from 2024 shows that titanium sponge output rose to 256,000 tons, up 17.6% from the previous year, while titanium product output reached 170,000 tons, representing 65% of global supply. The proportion of applications in chemical, aerospace and other fields continues to expand. The current industry is promoting technological breakthroughs in the field of high-end manufacturing through technological innovation and standardization construction.

Industry Scale and Technology Level

1. Basic Material Production

The self-sufficiency rate of titanium sponge is close to 100%, and the annual output of titanium has maintained a growth rate of 7% for three consecutive years.

The amount of titanium used in 3C electronics, medical devices and other fields has steadily increased, and the application structure has been continuously optimized.

2. Technology Upgrade Direction

Melting technology: Driving the use of high-capacity vacuum consumable arc furnaces to achieve higher purity in titanium alloys.

Processing technology: Expand the application of technologies such as additive manufacturing and superplastic forming to achieve precision processing of complex parts.

Challenges in Optimizing Industrial Structure

1. Mismatch Between Production Capacity and Demand

High-end titanium materials (such as aviation-grade TC4 alloy) still face technical bottlenecks, resulting in partial import dependency.

Meanwhile, oversupply in mid- and low-end products has led to intensified market price competition.

2. Progress in Standardization Construction

A total of 84 national standards for the titanium industry have been issued, covering material production, testing, and other key processes.

The promotion of green manufacturing standards is helping drive energy conservation and emission reduction across the sector.

Collaborative Development Path

1. Technology Innovation Cooperation

Building joint platforms that connect industry, academia, and research will be essential for advancing high-performance titanium alloy technologies, especially in aerospace and marine engineering.

2. Application Market Expansion

New Energy Sector: The development of titanium bipolar plates and related components for hydrogen fuel cells presents a growth opportunity.

Construction Sector: Exploring the lightweight application of titanium alloys in large-scale building structures can help improve structural durability while reducing weight.

3. Resource Integration Strategy

Strengthening the synergy between titanium ore resource development and sponge titanium production will reduce overall supply chain costs and enhance industry resilience.

Development Outlook

China's titanium industry will need to further enhance its capability to produce high-end materials domestically. By leveraging standardization and ongoing technological advancements, the sector aims to achieve comprehensive replacement of titanium materials in strategic areas such as aerospace and nuclear energy, supporting the continued upgrading of the high-end equipment manufacturing industry.
